So, there are a lot of big questions around what an optimal innovation system would look like. Somewhat surprisingly to my students, there isn’t actually rigorous evidence that stronger patents increase overall research investments, much less whether this benefit is large enough to outweigh the patent system’s costs. ![]() Interestingly, it’s not even clear whether the patent system is an engine of innovation. įord: Can you tell us a little bit about the patent system generally?
